Remember back in the day when a guy named Chris Tomlin burst onto the CCM worship scene? It seemed like out of nowhere he just appeared and suddenly every artist on the planet wanted to write or perform a song with this new guy who took the world by storm and eventually became the face of modern worship music. That mantle now belongs to one Brandon Lake who got his start with Bethel and since those early years back in 2019, Lake has quickly risen to the top of the charts with his songs being sung in churches around the world. It has been two years since
his last full-length worship album and his latest release, King Of Hearts is a behemoth treasure chest of 16 eclectic songs featuring southern rock, modern pop, country americana and even some R & B funkiness that will appeal to a wide audience.
The headlining song of the album is his previously released“ Hard Fought Hallelujah”. Lake wrote and performed this powerful anthem with country star, Jelly Roll as the two singers debuted the song at the CMA’ s earlier this year. The song is a powerful and deep exploration of the valleys and mountains of faith, particularly during challenging times. It’ s a raw, vulnerable anthem of choosing surrender over despair and finding praise even amidst hardship. The combination of the two artists vocals and gritty guitars give the song a raw and authentic flavor that everyone can relate to.
“ Daddy’ s DNA” is a country rocker reminding believers that no matter what, the blood of our creator flows in our veins, and he is always seeking a relationship with us.“ Plans” takes the narrative from Jeremiah 29:11 in an acoustic driven declaration about how God always has the best plans for us.
The title track is a wonderfully written look back at the crucifixion that goes far beyond telling the story of the death of Jesus. Here, Lake digs deep into how we often take for granted what Jesus really did for us on the cross as he boldy declares;“‘ Cause You gave Your life, I gave You nothing You poured me grace, that blood keeps on running. A love so great, you took my place. After all that I’ ve done, I’ ve been forgiven Those scars made a way to enter Your kingdom. On golden streets beside a King;”. This song would be a powerful addition to any Good Friday service.
“ SEVENS” is a formidable and gritty look at Revelations that is more performance tune than congregationally friendly while“ That’ s Who I Praise” is filled with pop energy and a hook laden chorus that will stick in your heart and mind long after the track has ended.
King Of Hearts is a colossal album with a lot of great moments featuring well-crafted songs written for a huge audience. Lake’ s voice shines on every track and although it was a bit lengthy, this might be his best release so far.

As a child of the 70’ s and 80’ s, I am drawn to bands and artists that actually play real instruments. I want that big, bold rockin guitar sound and arena shaking drums with the hearty B3 organ or an upright piano plucking out an unforgettable melody as some ridiculously high tenor belts out notes I could only dream of hitting. But the Gospel isn’ t just meant for one type of person is it? The story of Jesus was
