FINDING BALANCE IN YOUR ROLE AS A WORSHIP GUITAR PLAYER | Chris Rocha
In my long musical journey , I ’ ve encountered many phases in life . The younger me was more solely focused on building my musical talent and being the best musician I can be . As I got older , I learned to balance things out and know the importance of balancing everything else that life comes with . Living within your purpose of a successful Christian musician has its own struggles and takes work . Once you find your balance within that I believe is where you really see the joy in your life flourish .
As a worship guitar player , you wear so many different hats . You ’ re a musician , a church volunteer , a leader , and a follower . Your role is multifaceted , and finding balance between preparation , concerts , family , and spiritual walk is crucial to maintaining your physical , emotional , and spiritual well-being . In this article , we ’ ll explore the importance of balance and provide practical tips to help you navigate the demands of your role .
PREPARATION : THE BEHIND-THE-SCENES WORK Preparation is essential to delivering a great performance . It involves rehearsing songs , perfecting your technique , and staying up to date with new music and trends . I ’ ve been in situations where I showed up to play and I wasn ’ t well prepared . I spent the whole time trying to not play wrong notes that my creative juices were completely sucked out of my playing . I believe every musician gets to a point where they develop their own unique sound that makes them special . If you ’ re not prepared you won ’ t be able to unleash your signature sound because you ’ ll be too occupied just trying to not make a mistake .
To strike a balance in your practicing , set realistic goals and prioritize your practice sessions . Allocate specific times for rehearsal and stick to your schedule . Remember , preparation is not just about mastering songs ; it ’ s also about realizing our role as worshippers and not forgetting the importance of what we do .
CONCERTS : THE PUBLIC FACE OF WORSHIP Concerts are the public face of worship , where you get to share your gift with others . They can be exhilarating , but also draining . The pressure to perform , combined with the emotional highs and lows of leading worship , can take a toll on your mental and physical health . I believe that ’ s why Sunday afternoon naps are so coveted . Ha !
To maintain balance , establish boundaries and prioritize self-care . Make time for rest , exercise , and healthy eating . Surround yourself with a support team , including fellow musicians , mentors , and loved ones , who can encourage and support you . All these rhythms in life are very important and have to always be prioritized
