[ Andrew ] We just played a Fair last night . It was in Iowa and they were singing at the top of their lungs . ( laughing ) It was great . To have people immediately sing along … it ’ s really special .
[ WM ] Because you ’ re not the typical worship musician band and typically not playing the instruments like a worship band would , or how the vocalists would sing or even how the front people would be performing , how do you describe We The Kingdom to other people and what you do ?
[ Andrew ] Martin ? Just earlier today . What ’ d you say today ? We went to grab some breakfast real fast and the waitress asked about our music . I usually get like , “ I don ’ t know ”. I ’ m almost embarrassed when people ask , when they figure out if we ’ re in a band . What kind of music is it ? Just to say we play Christian music , I feel for some reason , not that it doesn ’ t do it justice , but I don ’ t know . I think we have more of a raucous rock and roll gritty side to it , you know ? Which is really how we live our lives . Just wild and free . And so I typically describe it as it ’ s got gospel at the roots , but it also has a kind of country rock and roll feel to it . So I got gospel , country and rock is how I would quickly describe the sonic sound .
[ Franni ] I heard Martin say before it ’ s like rock and roll for the soul . And I like that .
[ WM ] I like that . Okay , so this is the live album . For live worship albums you try to capture the experience of worship that night . But this is a live album about capturing your musical performance .
When I was growing up , a couple of key live albums came out that changed the landscape of music . One was Peter Frampton ’ s Frampton ’ s Come Alive , the double album . Then also came out Deep Purple ’ s Live in Japan double album . And that was just a really heavy rock album , but a great album . Experiencing the live performace captured on vinly put them on the map . It gave them a higher profile because it ’ s not just a rehash of your songs , it ’ s trying to capture you live in concert .
So what were your guys ’ thoughts about going into recording the Live From the Ryman album ?
[ Martin ] Something our tour manager was saying that I thought was really interesting is in the comedian industry , they will test their material first , work out all their parts , their flow , their pacing and then they ’ ll go to record their Netflix special or whatever , once that ’ s already hashed out . And I feel like in the music world , oftentimes it ends up being the opposite … where you record a record and you ’ re in a studio mindset and you ’ re maybe thinking radio or more commercial sometimes . And then when you go to build these live arrangements , you find that the song gives you something more at a different angle that you didn ’ t think was there , you know ?
But what I ’ m excited about is , I mean , we spent years hashing out these arrangements that didn ’ t make it on the studio cut just because we weren ’ t in that mindset . Often times studio versions have to be shorter , you know ? You have a little more grace when you play live . So I ’ m just excited for people to experience what it feels like , just the hard sweat equity that we put into these arrangements to experience a song in a different way .
