Taya
( Smith )
Gaukrodger is a voice you probably have heard
numerous times over the past 10 years on such
congregational favorites as “ Oceans ( Where
Feet May Fall )”, “ Touch the Sky ” and “ Broken
Vessels ( Amazing Grace )”. After many years of
writing , she is finally off and running with her first
self-titled solo project which contains fourteen
new songs of pop-infused worship that fans of
Hillsong will very much enjoy .
“ For All My Life ” is the standout track that
includes a subtle Rhodes piano , groovy drums
and peppy hope-infused lyrics . The melody is catchy and Taya shows her insane vocal chops as she declares how God has proved over again that He never abandons those He loves . “ Getaway ” is sure to be another chart topper as Taya declares the invitation that God gives to us to “ get away ” with Jesus and to experience true rest and healing of our spirits through His love and mercy . This song encourages us to let our walls down and to get real with Jesus . This track will connect with every believer who has experienced spiritual weariness while pointing out that we all need to take intentional time to escape the daily routine of life and just be at the feet of Jesus .
“ Canticle ” is soft and humble prayer asking Jesus to be in every part of our being while “ Carry Me Home ” is one of the few songs on this big collection that is more on the upbeat side . Here , Taya speaks of how human relationships can often let us down , especially when we are struggling in our lives . The chorus assures us that when others fail us , the promises of God are everlasting , and it is those promises that we lean on .
Taya is a nice first offering and for the most part was well written and of course her voice carries this entire album . I enjoyed how she was not afraid to get “ boots-on-the-ground ” when it came to her writing as many of these songs are cliché free and will connect with people right where they are at . Sonically , the album was a little dull as too many of the tracks sounded similar in arrangement and instrumentation . This album by itself is solid and should be listened to as a gift to the church .

Sandra McCraken has always been a breath of fresh air when it comes to bringing new music to the church . Her diverse style reflects her deep desire to impact different generations and cultures for the sake of the Gospel . Drawing from folk , gospel and hymn traditions , Sandra is a true artist who doesn ’ t root herself in any single genre and by doing so , increases her ability to reach a wide audience .
Her newest album , Light In The Canyon which is comprised mostly of previously released McCracken favorites slightly re-wrapped in new arrangements . These songs prove the point that sometimes less is more as she and her band weave their way through the ten song setlist with very simple acoustic instrumentation
