comes to God . Our understanding of God , our relationship to God , really when you just break it down , very simply , he is just asking for our yes , which is our surrender .
Our surrender to His will … to his way , to Him … to Him to move in our lives . I think the word yes is an essential word to our walk with God as Christians . It ' s also essential to our ourselves as worshipers .
It ' s important for us as worshipers to be able to give our yes to Jesus , which is like I said , our surrender . It ' s hard to worship to give him your life , to follow him , to trust him … if you aren ' t surrendered . If you ' re still clinging to your way or your own path or your own whatever it is , it ' s just going to be difficult .
I ' ve talked quite a bit about this whenever I talk about like my personal testimony in how through the wounds , through the pain , through so many things I held onto , I can do this on my own . I ' m going to do it in my strength . I ' m going to do it my way , simply because I was afraid to trust Jesus . I realized that my living like that , my not really giving him my yes , was actually just keeping me at a distance , which was only a detriment to me , and to my life . Really , the only way to just true abundant life in Christ I think , is to continually give our yes .
[ WM ] And “ I Say Yes ” leads off your new live project entitled , Revival Nights . Can you tell us about the project overall and the tour that it was recorded during just the past June ?
[ Kim ] It is eight songs , I believe . I also have my best friend , Molly Williams , she ' s a worship leader in North Carolina . We ' ve been friends for decades and she taught me so much about worship leading . She ' s been coming out with me on all of these , and she ' s got a couple songs on there as well . They ’ re cover songs that she did out on the road .
[ WM ] That explains it because I saw the master sequence and it had quite a few songs ,
I Say Yes
and I thought , “ That ' s not an EP . That ' s a fullblown release .”
[ Kim ] Something like a larger EP , you would say .
[ WM ] The song , “ Your Spirit ” has so much truth packed into it ! How did you , Matt ( Redman ), Jonas ( Myrin ), and Tasha ( Cobbs Leonard ) collaborate on it ? I see such great feedback on it coming for listeners . Please tell us about the song and its recording .
[ Kim ] I love this song . I love the lyrics . I love the melody . I love the chord progression . It ' s a little old school chord progression , which I love . I think people also love that . It ' s reminiscent of songs and church back in the day , just a little bit . This song has a funny story behind it .
I got together and wrote this song with Jonas and Matt originally . When it was all finished , I went to my team and said , " I would love to record this on a Jesus Culture album , on one of our bigger group albums ." None of them liked the song . No one liked it . They all said , " Kim , it ' s old school ."
I said , " First of all , I love old school . Second of all I think people are going to love this song . This is a powerful song ." It got voted out . Matt contacted me and said , " Are you going to do
Your Spirit
this song ?" I said , " No , I ' m sorry . My team is not on board ." He said , " Well , do you mind if we pitch it to Tasha ( Leonard Cobbs )?"
I said , " Absolutely ! Go for it ." They pitched it to Tasha . She loved it . She wanted to tweak a few things , and she added her writing . She added her pieces to it to complete the song . Then , she went ahead and recorded it and she put it up , she did a YouTube video of it , and it is so powerful . It ended up breaking all these records for most streamed gospel song on YouTube . I don ' t know . It just broke all these records . Then , all these people from our label , everyone ' s contacting me saying , " Did you know there ' s this song that Tasha did that you ' re a writer on ? We didn ' t even know about it ." I said , " Yes , you did . You did know about this song . You all rejected this song ."
When this came about , I said , " I want to do this song on the road and record it ." Everyone said , " Yes , absolutely . Go ahead ."
[ WM ] Your team members are in good company because when “ Over the Rainbow ” was pitched for The Wizard of Oz , the producers rejected it . The movie studio didn ' t want to do it . Judy Garland said , " If that song ' s not in the movie , I ' m not in the movie ."
[ Kim ] Wow !
[ WM ] True story .
Are there any other songs from Revival Nights that you would like to point our attention to ?
[ Kim ] I will say , we put a couple of oldies on there that go way back . “ I Have Found ”, which is from my very first solo record I ever put out , and that was a lot of fun to do those out on the road for all the people who are there , who have followed my music for that long and know the song .
“ Still Believe ” was also on there . “ Still Believe ” is another one that ' s just one of my favorites from the Still Believe record . That ' s out of all
