on for many years is that our job as worship leaders is to be like a server at a restaurant . We are to set the table and wait on people as they dine with the Lord . We have all had a server who provided poor service or interrupted our meal . We don ’ t want to interrupt people when we are leading them in worship .
Some of the biggest ways to interrupt or become a distraction ? Being unprepared before stepping on the platform , reading music instead of leading people , playing measure 1 to the last measure without being sensitive to the Spirit , or being more concerned with look and tone over connecting with the Lord .
Another analogy I have taken to heart over the years is that worship is like giving God a card . If we are lacking in the “ wording department ” we can go to the store and get an anniversary card for our spouse with carefully crafted words that express our personal feelings better than we can ourselves . However , we need to sign the card for it to carry that meaning to our spouse . Worship is like that . Well written lyrics are meaningless to the Lord unless we “ sign the card ourselves .” It ’ s important for the worship leader to understand this and give space for the worshippers to interact with the Lord rather than filling up every second with noise or talking .
Part of worship leading is worshiping , and part is leading . We really can ’ t do one without the other . We must know who it is that we ’ re leading and take them to the Throne with us . When I was starting in the 80 ’ s , there was no training , no mentors , no help … I ’ m sure thankful for what we have now , because we can all become Better By Sunday .
