CAPO GUITAR
“ YOU ’ VE ALREADY WON ” SHANE & SHANE | Mitch Bohannon
Have you been listening to the new song from Shane & Shane on the radio ? I seem to catch it every day on Air1 between church and home and I absolutely love a song of victory ! Shane & Shane are known for their rich , acoustic sound , so I really don ’ t think there is any better way to approach this song than with the cut capo .
“ You ’ ve Already Won ” has a strong 6 / 8 swing with an easy , repeating chord progression . Playing with the cut capo creates full and open chord voicings with simple fingerings . The song is recorded in the key of “ Db ”. If you want to play with the recording and / or lead in that same key , place a full capo on fret 4 and your cut capo on fret 6 .
“ Db ” gets too high for me , so one of the benefits of playing with a capo is I can drop or raise any key by ½ steps one fret at a time while keeping the same fingerings . I ’ m playing the song in the key of “ C ,” so my full capo is on fret 3 and my cut capo on fret 5 . My advice … don ’ t lock yourself into playing recorded keys . Find what suits your voice the best and play it there . The people you are leading will follow . The higher the key you can sing it in , the louder your people will sing .
You ’ ll see in the video ; this progression uses what I usually call “ walking chords ” as they create a bass-walk either up or down … look at the progression going from the “ F ” to the “ C / E ” and then to the “ Dm7 .” [ The natural ( standard tuning ) shapes that you ’ re playing would be “ C ” to “ Em ” ( only fingering string 5 ) to “ Am7 ”] Grouping that walk with the openness of the “ G ,” “ Am ,” and the “ C ” chords really creates a big , open movement .
Grab your guitar and cut capo and see what you think . Don ’ t have a cut capo , for practice , you can turn a standard Kyser around backward . The boot is made to grip and protect the back of the neck , but it ’ s very close to the size of the cut capo rubber . Keep in mind that if you have a narrow neck , you ’ ll get some buzz or dead strings .
