occur by flying subs .
• Reduced impact and ‘ kick ’.
• Load capacity limitations and engineering approval requirement .
• Ceiling resonance issues .
• Possible line of sight issues .
• More difficult to access for installation and service .
• More costly - increased number of elements , engineering , rigging , servicing
Solutions
• Add additional flown coupled units to regain SPL lost via flown placements .
• Add strategically implemented groundplaced subwoofer for added energy and kick as desired or required .
SPECIAL TACTICS Cardioid Configurations
• Cardioid done right can be a great avenue when it comes to placing LF energy more effectively in the room and resolves issues for the venue and performers .
Maximizing efficiency when resources and elements are limited .
• Consider what is and what should be routed to low frequency elements . Not every instrument and signal needs to be or even should be channeled to the subs . Clarity and energy can be maximized with a little FOH shepherding . See previous Worship Musician articles around using high-pass filters at the console or even at the microphone in some instances .
FINAL THOUGHTS :
While the tendency is to track straight into proposals filled with SPL projections , coverage , and advanced sonic modeling , the project ’ s success isn ’ t about the paper tiger ‘ tech specs ’, it is in the final emotional impact . That said , discussing the benefits , performance , and deployment early on tend to increase the likelihood of the greatest emotional impact in the end .
Just about every consultation I have ever engaged in required a healthy dose of translating tech speak to non-technical users . This is a key piece of the puzzle . But let ’ s not forget that how we go about communicating and partnering
is an important element in ensuring success . My natural consultative partnership approach has not only helped decision makers discover their tech needs and big picture desires , but it more organically leads to mutual success . Instead of focusing on selling , the focus should be on helping your clients down a path of discovery , education , relationship building , and partnership .
