album it ' s always felt like can we do this in a different way ? I was trying to do it in a different way to keep me inspired , to keep me growing , understanding , and learning . That ' s been my approach since the beginning .
[ WM ] That ’ s a great answer . Now , I ’ ve only asked this question on two other occasions . When you first began touring , back in your Waco days , was there a certain town that you visited that had that “ magic ”, capturing your imagination , and causing you to want to return someday ? For me , one of those towns was Traverse City , Michigan , during apple harvest time . Austin , Texas , in 1976 , was another one . What say you ?
[ Crowder ] San Francisco , hands down .
[ WM ] Really ?
[ Crowder ] Love San Francisco . Absolutely . It was partially because we wanted to play at The Fillmore so badly for probably several years , we were in pursuit of getting to play at The Fillmore . The folks that run that venue , for decent reasons , were like , " That doesn ' t make sense ." You know ? It ' s like , why would a church band come play The Fillmore ? That just doesn ' t fit this rock and roll venue . It took a lot of people a long amount of time to convince them to give it a shot and see what happens .
Then when it did happen , it was just perfection . We had the best day ever . It wasn ' t the best night playing , it was the best day ever , with all the venue people , everybody that was like , " I don ' t think this is a good idea ." But we had a great day .
And the night was amazing . The end of the evening was amazing . There was a guy , one of the bouncers , Dirty Dave . He had the shirt on , and it said Dirty Dave . He had been there forever , in his words . I was the last person in the venue , he was still there , I was going to grab my bag , the room is kind of upstairs on this balcony area , and he ' s still there . I go by him , like , " Hey , I ' m just going to grab my bag ." I go grab my bag , I come out , and he stopped me .
He ' s like , " Hang on , Crowder ."
He goes , " Man , you made me cry tonight . I ain ' t cried since my momma died ." I ' m like , " Hey , I didn ' t make you do anything . First of all … what are you talking about ?" He goes , " Man , I ' ve been in this room for many years I can think of , and I ' ve seen everything musically happen photo by Harrison Maxwell
in this room you could ever ... Like the most amazing musical moments ever happened . But I don ' t know what that was . Something was different tonight , and I need you to tell me what it was , because I ' m just sitting here outside your room , watching your bags , and I just started weeping , and I don ' t know why ."
He said , " What was that ?" I go , " Oh , Dirty Dave , well that ' s called the Holy Spirit ."
