moving back to Orange County and serving at Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa . It was during our time at CCCM that our daughter Jillian was born . All that to say , our kids were always at the services … all the services … every week … for years . They certainly sang a lot there and were exposed to worship in song ! We did sing at home , on various occasions , including our rehearsing harmonies and various songs for upcoming services . I have to say that our home was mostly marked by the Word and prayer , by stories , games and hugs . And saying we ’ re sorry , when we were sorry , and loving them so very much .
[ WM ] And because of Lisa ’ s great love for singing , it must have come so naturally for your kids to learn to sing . All three of them . Am I right again ?
[ John ] They definitely didn ’ t get their voices from me ! I have always sung like that guy in the 5 th row . Lisa felt so strong that Evan should take piano lessons . So , he started at age five . I later learned that he viewed sight reading ( notes ) as a secret language and learning how to read them was uncovering the secret message … so to speak . Fun . At some point he heard and learned a Michael W . Smith instrumental by ear and off he went . Amazing . He says that I taught him guitar , but I don ’ t remember teaching him very much . It seems to me he transferred his piano skills to guitar . Crazy amazing player and singer . Philip didn ’ t even pick up the guitar until after we moved back down to North San Diego County in ’ 96 . He wanted to be a part of the Jr . High worship team and learned guitar . He would play 4-6 hours a day non-stop . I remember when he had only been playing for 2-3 months … he came into the living room to share a song he had just written . I was not expecting to hear what I heard . It was the title song to his indie album ‘ Give You My World ’. So good . He also wrote “ Jesus , Lord of Heaven ” right around that same time . He also says I taught him how to play guitar . I suppose initially , but he dove in by himself every day . Jillian has sung on a few different worship teams . We love her voice and really tried to get her to sing on the City Light album . It just never happened . Hopefully next time . Ha ! - we ’ ll see .
[ WM ] Now City Light is a John Wickham project and would obviously feature your guitar work . Both your wife Lisa and Madison Cunningham have contributed beautiful vocals to this project . Please tell us about this .
[ John ] “ I Would See Jesus ” was always meant for Lisa to sing . She has this genuine longing and feeling in her voice that has
