going make it , so towards the end I was just trying anything . Buddy came over one day , and he threw down on a couple songs , and I just said , “ Hey Buddy , I ’ m just going to put you on record , would you just try “ Jesus Loves Me ”?” And what you hear is what he did . I just turned around and we looked at each other and it was like , “ Okay , I think we got it ”. That was one of the things with this record , there were so many little cool surprises , and that ’ s what you hope for .
[ WM ] I think Carrie is right in that for many , even some folks in the church , My Savior will be their introduction to the hymns . Did you have the similar church singing background as she did ?
[ David ] I do . I kind of grew up playing in the band and playing piano , bass and drums . Whoever didn ’ t show up to play at our church I would be the fill in ( laughs ). I definitely grew up singing a lot of these songs . And I think she ’ s right , we take these songs for granted a lot if you ’ ve grown up in church . Hopefully some folks out there will get to be introduced to some incredible songs , and some of these songs , they ’ re old , they ’ ve got some time on them , and it was very cool that we were able to do a record like this , I think it will be around year after year . Whenever you want to sprinkle it in and go down there , you ’ ll have it , and that ’ s what I think is amazing about having this record out .
Jesus Loves Me
[ David ] If I would say anything it would be just don ’ t be afraid to go for it . If that means being an artist , great , if that means being a songwriter , great , or if it means wanting to be a producer or record maker – great ! Just don ’ t be afraid to be different and to do something that no one else is doing because you will definitely get a lot further down the road trying to do that than you will trying to just emulate what everybody else does .
Even though there is a lot to learn I think there is a good place for that . Do the best you can to find your own voice and your own way to do something , whether it feels right or wrong in how you ’ re doing it , that ’ s okay because now days ( as we talked about earlier ) there is just so much music we have . What really resonates with people is when they hear something from someone else ’ s perspective that they can ’ t get anywhere else . It ’ s very much like , “ Wow I haven ’ t heard it like that before , show me more !” So , I think that goes for any facet of making music , trying to find your voice is really important because that is what will keep you doing it longer , and there is something about competing with yourself that really gives you more joy and more fulfillment , because you ’ re really just chasing after what you feel and what you hear and what ’ s being impressed upon you .
Sometimes you find it or sometimes you live another day to keep trying to find it , but I think that is where there is a lot of fulfillment .
[ WM ] David , what an honor it ’ s been to have this time with you . Thank you so much .
[ David ] Thank you , appreciate it .
[ WM ] I must say that I teared-up several times listening to this record . Not only is it done so well , the musicianship , production , arrangements , and Carrie ’ s voice are at such a high caliber , and the entire spirit of it is just great ! Well done !
[ David ] Thank you so much . I don ’ t take this compliment for granted .
[ WM ] What words of encouragement would you have for aspiring musicians , songwriters , and producers ? How do they look for the good in something , and make it great ? photo by Cameron Premo
