in the same way that a coded freedom song would , so the Lord has been using us to do that . Of course , it ’ s not us , that ’ s Him , but its super humbling and amazing that it ’ s the same method but in a different time .
[ WM ] Are you familiar with The Fisk Jubilee Singers ?
[ Naomi ] Yeah , it ’ s a long , forgotten history , but the remnants of it still remain and were seeing bits of it . The Fisk Jubilee Singers were a part of the inspiration behind this project , and even naming it Jubilee because they really put Gospel music on the map , and with spirituals singing their way to God . They toured around the country so much that it started to popularize this music .
[ WM ] The project leads off with the song , “ Jubilee ”, which is co-written by you Naomi , along with Bryan and Katie Torwalt . In fact , the Torwalts participate in this song as well . Jubilee is such an amazing theme , isn ’ t it ? The notion of all debts being forgiven , slaves and prisoners released , and God ’ s favor flowing at the end of 49-year-long cycles is an incredible picture of mercy ! Naomi , what can you tell us about this song ?
[ Naomi ] The song came from just that idea , we were having a conversation . As you know I ’ m black , and Brian and Katie are white , and
Jubilee we ’ re in the middle of this racial situation in our nation and this was at a time when it was really high and hot and heavy . And we were talking as friends , and we couldn ’ t help but talk about some of this stuff , and as we began to talk about it we thought maybe we should write a song that shows the Father ’ s heart . So , we tried to do that . I ’ ve tried to write songs like this . I have a song called “ Make Us One ”. But nothing in that really stuck , and we wanted to speak to the Lord about what He wants to say to people right now . So , we began to write out Jubilee , “ Listen for the free man singing / He has delivered me / Listen up to the seasons changing / He ’ s rebuilding everything ”. This was a song of hope .
The way that things are , they don ’ t have to continue to be . We wanted to sing something prophetic because that ’ s something all of us carry is this prophetic grace . And we wanted to
