Never an artist to rest, the Messengers follow
up 2019’s two EPs with a new full-length
project. Darren Mulligan’s quirky phrasings
remain a major draw, barreling through the
organ/horn driven “Love” and power ballad
of comfort “Maybe It’s OK,” driven by reverse-fade
patches. “You Are My Hope” provides
a particular vocal showcase for Mulligan’s
higher end. A gospel choir lends, well,
power to the triumphant title track, a celebration
of the Holy Spirit’s work in the lives of
believers. Soft/loud anthems are the order of
the day on tracks like “Never Stop Singing”
and “Never Change Your Mind.” Fat analog
synth sounds rule on “I Need to Feel It,” and
“Always You” benefits from swooping strings,
but “Knock Me Down” provides the album’s
most exciting moment, courtesy of a killer
guitar riff and stomping percussion, with the
welcome return of the gospel choir to boot.
It’s a message worth hearing on repeat.
