One of the most popular questions we hear as
musicians is “How do I find my sound?”. This
question is a very important one that leads us
to understanding our role in our worship team.
In a recent conversation I had with Anthony
Catacoli, producer and member of Generación
12, an influential worship band from Bogota
Colombia, we discussed this same topic.
Anthony mentioned that when we lose focus
on our role, our priorities get out of balance.
As musicians, it is important to understand our
role in our team in order to know how to find
our sound. In this article, I want to share some
tips that will help you bring a new perspective
to your role as a musician in a worship team.
CONNECTION VS. ENTERTAINMENT
This point is crucial to be able to adjust our
focus and be sensitive to what the moment
asks of us. As musicians, sometimes we are
tempted to show off our years of musical
training or be led by the complex and fun ideas
happening in our minds. Now let me be clear,
creativity is great! We are called to be creative
and should never stop allowing that creativity
to flow out of us but there’s a time and place
for everything. When we recognize that in the
church we have a very unique responsibility
to create an atmosphere where people can
create a connection with God, our role changes
to not just "musician" but now "musician +
minister”. This responsibility requires not only
musical knowledge but also sensitivity to
recognize what is currently happening in the
congregation. Many times, less is more. When
you are not sure of what to do, ask yourself,
