there and totally on it. Was that instinct, good
luck or a combination of the two?
[Lance] Instagram had been around for
maybe a year. It felt like a great platform for
showcasing our rigs – we never get tired of
looking at gear. It may be redundant, it may be
pristine and perfect, it may be a train wreck,
but, we love to see what everyone else is
working with.
I created @GearTalk on Instagram to showcase
and feature photos of Gear Talk members’ rigs
from Facebook. People get a thrill when the rig
they have poured their hearts into gets featured
on another Instagram page. So I told Facebook
members, “Send me photos of your gear and
follow @GearTalk on Instagram and I’ll try to
feature it!”
[WM] You have amazing photos on Instagram!
Where do you find them and how much time
does it take?
[Lance] Like I said, in the early days, I
harvested most of the photos from the
Facebook community. Since @GearTalk has
become so massive on Instagram, it is one of
those pages that gets tagged maybe hundreds
of times a day with beautiful shots. So now,
the hard part is not finding amazing content,
it’s choosing what amazing content is shared
and when.
[WM] You’re a social influencer, so I’d love to
know which influencers inspire you and why?
[Lance] Great question! The term ‘social
media influencer’ is still funny to me, but it is
very much a legit career right now. Online
content is a thin line we should all walk. There
is way too much information out there and
you really gotta pick and choose what will
get your attention. Otherwise, you’re headed
down a never-ending rabbit hole that will find
you on YouTube watching your 12th software
compressor review of the same product over
and over again at 4:00am.
