[WM] What are some of your favorite things
about the community itself?
[Lance] I love the inside jokes that only an
online collective comes up with. Things that
make no sense to anyone that is not part of
the community. The redundant questions like
“What is the best compressor?” and the gear
memes. People start creating memes about
other members of the group and we all get it,
but you could never explain them to someone
outside the community. It still really feels tight
knit like that.
[WM] In your wildest dreams, did you have
any idea that it would become what is has?
[Lance] Of course not, but I think that is one
of the coolest parts of the community. It was
not created to blow up. It was all very organic.
The members knew that no one was trying to
sell them on anything. I’ve never done a lot of
things to grow the community in numbers. I
actually did a lot to keep it small for a long time.
Now, it has a life of its own.
[WM] How many groups are there now?
[Lance] On Facebook I have created around
60 Gear Talk groups. There are regional groups
like Gear Talk: Texas, and instrument specific
groups like Gear Talk: Bass, as well as Gear
Talk: Recording. We even have a General
Discussion group which is a blast.
[WM] Is there one you like to hang out in
community and culture, I am really drained and day and not take it for granted. Every time
