PRODUCER SERIES A PRIMER | Brandon Bee The music world has been changing so much. Even before Covid hit we were seeing worship leaders and churches learning and investing in recording equipment. With the desire to connect with their church and the big ‘C’ church. Starting out as a producer before I got into ministry I knew that just learning equipment wasn’t going to automatically make recording sound good. Producing, engineering, and mixing are not only separate highly trained skills but also different mind sets. This makes mastering them all very difficult. Not to say you shouldn’t learn to do it yourself, it’s just important to honor the process and the work it takes to be good at it. I wanted to start on the first producer article with 3 practical ways to help you get the right mindset. In the coming articles, we will dive deeper into more specific tips and tricks on how to make our home or church recordings better. PREPARE YOUR MIND TO THINK LIKE A PRODUCER, ENGINEER, AND MIXER. Ways to accomplish is • Listen to your favorite or most influential songs you have in your collection and try to point out the instruments and parts that you feel are foundational of the track. • Listen to your song and try to write down what kind of parts you could hear that could be the foundation of your song. • Listen for the kick and bass patterns. • Listen to how much space is left in the higher frequencies for the vocals. • Hear the dynamic ups and downs. How they use not only quiet and loud but also how they us more or less, low frequency drop outs and ins, more frequent movement or less movement to accomplish dynamics. 134 July 2020 Subscribe for Free...
