does is canvases and flat surfaces. But she just
burned the designs onto the shells, and when I
sent them back to WFLIII they put the hardware
on.
All of that to say, it’s kind of my story, and the
things that I’ve walked through, and each drum
kind of hits a different piece of that. So, my floor
tom, it’s got a bit of a darker season acquainted
with it. It represents a time that I walked through
that was dark and really heavy. Thank the Lord
that I’ve been able to walk out of that, but that’s
a part of the story and it gives so much more
weight to the redemption that I’ve experienced.
I’m super excited about it.
[WM] Please tell us about the drum sizes that
you chose and why you chose them.
[Martin] On my older kit the bass drum is 24”,
and I always love the big, vintage sounds, even
playing those 28” and 30” kick drums for fun,
I’ve always loved that. But I was talking to a guy
named Timmy Jones. He used to be with For
King and Country but he’s with Chris Tomlin. He
plays a 22” kick and just hearing him explain,
especially live… obviously the 22” the low end,
but you get a little more punch because it’s
a little more focused, which I liked. It’s a new
thing for me, I’m excited to try it out. Obviously,
because of the virus, we haven’t been touring,
so I haven’t been able to play them live yet,
but I’m excited for that. The rack is a 9”x13”,
which is what I’ve always played, and the floor
is 16”x16”. I used to love really low, not a whole
lot of resonating, in the toms. But recently
tuning them up and letting them speak a little
bit - I’ve really enjoyed that. It’s not flat and it’s
very round and you get a lot of tone. Then for
the snare, it’s a 6.5”x14”.
[WM] And what are your drumheads of choice
these days for your toms and snare?
[WM] Your new single, “Don’t Tread on Me”, is
a marvelous musical marriage of rock anthem,
Americana, and the African American spiritual.
What can you tell us about this song?
[Martin] The first thing that comes to mind is,
that on the surface, it appears to be kind of this
stomp on the devil’s neck, rowdy, declarative
thing, which is incredible. But one thing that I
would really love for our audience and whoever
listens to understand is the deeper meaning.
I think it’s in Luke 10 that he talks about, it’s
one thing to have authority and power and all
of these things over the enemy, but an even
greater gift that our names are written in the
book of life. We will be with the Creator for
eternity, even though we get to experience bits
of victory here on earth and these declarative
things, it’s not just the fist in the air, it’s the
deeper meaning that we will never die. That’s
what I love about it.
[Martin] To be honest I haven’t done a whole
lot of experimenting with those, typically it’s
the Remo Emperors and Ambassadors. That’s
honestly been something that I’ve been trying
to dive into, but they’re just so reliable.
