a band play is the team effort, watching them
come together for a common purpose. And
I especially love watching bands who don’t
mind showing you that they love what they do.
I remember in an interview I read where Chris
Martin was talking about Coldplay, he was like,
“We don’t mind if we look like we love what
we’re doing.” That resonated with me – I want
to look like I love what I do because I do love
what I’m doing!
That same kind of idea translates to Worship
music. If the people on stage don’t look like
they believe what they’re singing, then why are
they trying to lead me in worship? Each person
has to kind of go on their own journey with that,
not everyone is wired up to be extroverted, not
everyone is wired up to be out front on stage.
Some people prefer to be in the shadows
and I get that. But I think it’s not just about
your actions on stage, it could be about your
attitude when you get there at 7:00 am and you
see your worship leader, and just encouraging
him or her and saying, “I love that song you
put in the set list” instead of complaining about
playing a song over again, or having to turn
your amp down. I think there is an attitude that
you can bring to your team that helps.
That 30,000-foot view helps lead worship
because you help put everyone on the team in
a good headspace to go out and do their job. I
really take this very seriously in our band when
we’re touring, I am constantly trying to think of
ways to help elevate the moment or encourage
here in Franklin, there’s a whole lot of, “I don’t it is staying engaged. I’m not ‘checking out’ the people around me. I’ll go find Chris before
know where this song is going!” and it’s really until my guitar part comes in. I’m not thinking, we get on stage to lead worship. Even if it’s just
fun. You kind of have to hang on for dear life “Well, in this song the other guy gets to play a pat on the back or a fist bump, any of that
and it’s been a good challenge for me. So that all the lead stuff so I’m just gonna barely look kind of stuff goes a long way with the person
part is very different because on tour there is interested” or, “This song doesn’t really have who’s thinking, “I have to remember all of my
hardly a moment in the night where I don’t guitar so I’m just gonna stand here!” lyrics, and I have to put a set list together, and
know what I’m going to play.
I have to have a conference with the pastor
There are moments where I may not be playing about how this went.” I know those people can
[WM] The concept that every person on for sixty seconds, but if I’m one of the three or carry a lot, Part of why I feel passionately about
the platform is leading worship can be really four people up front with the worship leader that is because I’ve been in that role and it really
revealing. What does this mean to you spiritually and the other singer, I want to be as engaged is eye opening. It’s not just about your actions
and/or musically? leading worship as they are. Any time in my on stage, that’s a huge part of it, but it’s really
life that I’ve ever watched a band, even that about having a team mentality where we all lift
isn’t worship music, what’s cool about seeing each other up!
