It was simply amazing and I was right in the middle of it, hands held high! Chris McClarney led worship for the Friday morning session with James Duke on electric guitar. Chris, James, and fellow [WM] columnist Jeffrey B. Scott are worship team members at Church of the City. Next, Lysa TerKeurst spoke and was simply riveting to listen to. Mack Brock followed and encouraged us with the chorus, “God is never going to let, He is never going to let me down.” The mix in the room was a big concert sound, Henry Seeley well balanced and not overbearing – high marks on production. Then it was time for the lunch break and they had ten different lunch trucks lined up and waiting outside – this is my kind of conference! After lunch Kim Walker-Smith spoke with a bubbly enthusiasm that was nothing short of infectious. She told us how God still requires surrender even when things are going strong. We cannot force God to show up. He shows up because He loves his children. Partner with Him in the moment. He has what we need, so take the weight of leading worship off and surrender it all to God. Matt Redman As the day rolled on, more and more good things happened. Chris Tomlin joined Andrew Peterson and together they sang the powerful new song composed by Andrew Peterson and Ben Shive called “Is He Worthy?”, which can be found on Tomlin’s new recording, Holy Roar. Next Matt Redman, Chris Tomlin and Jonas Myrin had an insightful discussion about songwriting (with some good musician humor thrown in). Matt stated that besides the craft, the songs need that breath of God on them – the part of the song that is an inspiration. He said he often starts with word or a phrase in songwriting and then there is a gestation period.
