especially if you don’t necessarily have a great work ethic. Or if you really want to learn a lot and you didn’t come from a huge background or you don’t have a ton of connections, it’s a good way to really dive in headfirst. But if you are just a go getter who doesn’t want to get caught up in school, and you want to be flexible and available to do what you want, then school is probably not the right route for you. [WM] Getting hired to play Christmas tours is part talent, part opportunity, part attitude and so on. What are the key things that you believe contribute to you getting hired and re-hired? [Garrett] A friend of mine, you might know him, Luke Anderson who is the drummer for So, I think that’s the number one thing. I’ve said this, their lives that they can trust and they can be working musician. multiple times, I’ve done some interviews and podcasts, and I say this every time. Everything I’ve learned in my twenty-six years of living is that relationships are just so important. It’s one of those things where if you’re just looking to get something from somebody, that is going to be visible in the relationship. But if you’re in your lane and just working really hard, and being a believer in the Christian faith and believing that God has a perfect plan for your life, and recognize that when an opportunity doesn’t go your way that that wasn’t meant for you to keep pursuing. You have to rely on God, but God also gives us the still mind, heart, passion and work ethic to do things on our own. He meets us in the process. I think that whatever you are doing, to pursue it with excellence is the first step. To drummers out there wanting to get really connected and keep a gig, I think the number one thing is… whether you’re a doctor, an accountant, a drummer, whatever you’re doing, you’re not going to be able to do any of it or keep it without being able to deliver at a high level.
