especially if you don’t necessarily have a great
work ethic. Or if you really want to learn a lot
and you didn’t come from a huge background
or you don’t have a ton of connections, it’s a
good way to really dive in headfirst. But if you
are just a go getter who doesn’t want to get
caught up in school, and you want to be flexible
and available to do what you want, then school
is probably not the right route for you.
[WM] Getting hired to play Christmas tours is
part talent, part opportunity, part attitude and
so on. What are the key things that you believe
contribute to you getting hired and re-hired?
[Garrett] A friend of mine, you might know
him, Luke Anderson who is the drummer for So, I think that’s the number one thing. Number artists with, and who are healthy and positive

multiple times, I’ve done some interviews and
podcasts, and I say this every time. Everything
I’ve learned in my twenty-six years of living is
that relationships are just so important. It’s one
of those things where if you’re just looking to
get something from somebody, that is going to
be visible in the relationship. But if you’re in your
lane and just working really hard, and being a
believer in the Christian faith and believing
that God has a perfect plan for your life, and
recognize that when an opportunity doesn’t go
your way that that wasn’t meant for you to keep
pursuing. You have to rely on God, but God
also gives us the still mind, heart, passion and
work ethic to do things on our own. He meets
us in the process.
I think that whatever you are doing, to pursue
it with excellence is the first step. To drummers
out there wanting to get really connected
and keep a gig, I think the number one thing
is… whether you’re a doctor, an accountant,
a drummer, whatever you’re doing, you’re
not going to be able to do any of it or keep
it without being able to deliver at a high level.
