the bases but not necessarily about being uber-
creative.
ADAPT WHEN NECESSARY
Of course, there may be times when a simpler
analog setup can leave you without something
you need. In those cases, you have to be able
to work around the limitations of your board
with a creative approach. Need an acoustic
sound but don't have space for it? Running
clean electric through a light chorus can let you
approximate that sound in a pinch.
DON'T BREAK THE BANK
It's easy to consider this second board as an
additional purchase, and for some of you, that
may be necessary depending on your needs.
For me, as much as I like my pedalboard to be
OCD-happy, I'm also a bit of a hoarder when it
comes to gear. When I recently ran through this
exercise myself, about the only thing I didn't
have enough of was Velcro! There have been
enough pedals of varying kinds purchased over
the years that I didn't have to touch anything
on my main board to begin building a more
compact setup. Even the surface you build
on doesn't have to be pristine. I've seen good
quality boards built on everything from scraps
of wood to skateboards.
APPLICATION
So, what have we learned? First, separate the
necessary from the nice-to-have; find the best
tool for the job. Second, embrace a mindset
that this is a workhorse, not a show pony. And
