GEAR REVIEW ECAMM LIVE STREAMING + VIDEO PLATFORM FOR MAC | Doug Doppler KEY FEATURES • Up to 4K Streaming • Local Recording • Built-in Switcher • Affordability • Enhances Zoom + Skype Before we dig in, it is important to say that I don’t like Ecamm Live… I love it. Seriously, as a content creator this application has changed my life and become a vital part of my production workflow. With that out of the way, let’s get to the what and why! The Ecamm Network offers a suite of products, and was founded by twin brothers Ken and Glen Aspeslagh while they were attending college in the ‘90s. Ecamm Live is a Mac-only application designed primarily for streaming, but can also be used to record high quality video in a range of aspect ratios and resolutions. The latter being the best solution I’ve come across for easily creating 1080x1080 videos for social media. This feature alone is well worth the price of admission. That said, let’s talk about some of the primary features Ecamm Live delivers for streaming. The number one comment I hear people say about this application is how easy it is to use. Noting that ‘easy to use’ often implies a light Ecamm’s Glen + Ken Aspeslagh feature set, that’s hardly the case here. The ease of use comes in the fact that there are ton of great features that are easy to get to, configure, and incorporate into your workflow. PLATFORM INTEGRATION If you’re simply wanting to stream a single camera to Facebook or YouTube, the Destination menu at the bottom right of the user interface makes it easy to select the desired platform. Noting that most of us want to multi-stream, this is also where go to select Restream.io, my go to platform for multi-streaming. Part of the ‘ease-of-use’ is demonstrated by what this application does and in this case does not allow you to do. Many people are unaware that when you stream to both Facebook and YouTube you double the bandwidth you need to stream. Generally speaking, you want at least 10 kbps (kilo bits per second) for your upload speed, and you want to leave at least 5 of that free so you have plenty of headroom when you stream. The benefit of using a multi-stream service like Restream.io is that they take the bandwidth hit when serving to multiple platforms. 128 August 2020 Subscribe for Free...
