XLR cable that can trace, and if that does the
job, keep it that way. With that being said, I
still firmly believe Dante has its place, we just
hardly use it. We are a big fan of Allen & Heath
desks, and if needed, the SLink protocol
has made splits so easy that we hardly find
ourselves needing Dante. We do have the
occasional client that wants to split, record,
and do virtual soundcheck as well, and that's
where we implement it. I personally wish we
could all pick one format and that be the
standard, though! (laughs)
[Judson] The digital audio world is pretty
fascinating. Broadcast uses a lot of MADI,
installed and touring sound seem to use a lot of
Dante and AVB, and then many manufacturers
have their own protocols (Allen & Heath SLink,
etc.) I am seeing a trend towards protocols
like this that play well with others, that is, on
standard networking. If you are in a smaller or
dedicated setup, then it is fine to connect with
an ethernet cable and call it a day. But in a
lot of modern setups, our clients want to be
able to connect for distributed audio, flexible
arrangements, separate mixes for broadcast
or others. Having the ability to plug into an
