LEADERSHIP
SHAPING WORSHIP CULTURE | Christy Colmenares
Sometimes I feel worship times are really
connecting and a special moment is brewing,
only to open my eyes and see a load of blank,
expressionless faces looking back at me. Now,
as I lead through a live stream or pre-recorded
service, I don’t have any faces looking back at
me!
Have you been here? Wanting so badly for your
church to have an engaging time of worship,
but not knowing if anything is connecting
through a screen?
I believe quarantine is the perfect time to
help our congregations engage even more
in expression and passion in their praise in
sung worship times. As worship leaders, we
are entrusted to lead a group of people on a
journey toward an encounter with Jesus. What
an excellent time we’re in to lead people to
encounters with God in their very own homes.
Here are two ways we, as worship leaders, can
empower ourselves to help shape the worship
culture in our churches even through this time
in quarantine.
THERMOMETER OR THERMOSTAT?
After a particularly tricky set recently, the
kind that feels like you are wading through
molasses, I was asked this question: "Did you
set out to be a thermometer or a thermostat?"
Behind this strange question was the realization
that my leading was too often influenced by a
room full of people. If the energy of the crowd
was high, I led better. When the people were
sluggish, I operated with less authority and
enthusiasm. I believe that leadership, including
worship leading, requires the skill of both
reading the temperature and being prepared to
set the temperature - whether people are in the
room or not.
Setting the temperature in any setting, live
stream or in person, takes practice. Most of all,
it requires you to be authentic. Trying to inject
passion while merely going through the motions
is simply acting! Our worship is a response to
God's revelation in our lives. Everything begins
and ends with God. Reading through the
scriptures you find countless acts of worship
that started through healing, miracles, or
revelation of the Father, Son, or Holy Spirit.
Worship is caught more than it's taught, and we
have to be spending time with Jesus in order
to see healing, miracles or gain revelations that
lead to worshipping authentically.
There's no shortcut to this, it's all about
spending time with Jesus. My friend and hero
Tim Hughes commented that "worship leading
is taking your private cry and making it public."
Setting the temperature of your church starts
with spending time with Jesus.
In episode one our Adoración & Tecnología
Secuencias.com Podcast our guest Ingrid
Rosario, Music Director for Lakewood Church
en Español powerfully shared that the Lord had
spoken to her during this pandemic and said,
“You know? I never wanted to live in a building.
My desire has always been to live within you.” I
find this to be such a powerful reminder during
these times as we get to lead worship from an
empty room into thousands of homes.
CONFIDENT WITH YOUR ARMOR.
There are countless lessons we can learn
from the story of David and Goliath, especially
in his refusal to wear King Saul's armor. The
Bible tells us that David chose not to wear the
armor because he wasn't accustomed to it and
wasn’t confident moving around in it.
At MultiTracks.com, we firmly believe you and
your entire team will be at your best when you
are entirely comfortable and confident on the
platform or through a screen. It means you
and your team need to be accustomed to the
armor, or songs, you are leading with, trusting
in the stability of the technology you use and
on the same page as a team. That's why
we design our resources with the mission of
enabling you, the worship leader, to focus on
what really matters. That's why we encourage
you to invest in your team and provide them
with the tools they need to be all that they can.
Tools like Chartbuilder with RehearsalMix are
incredible ways to develop your musicians and
to empower them to lead with the confidence.
Even through quarantine, you can lead with
confidence, set the temperature and shape
the worship culture of your church through
authentically leading by spending time with
God and by being confident with your armor.
