by Larry Shier

arry Shier was born in rural Ontario, Canada and

raised on a small, self sufficient homestead. He

was introduced at and early age to the concepts of soil fertility, even though the soil was stony and poor quality and growing season short.

He begged from his diapers to be taught to read. Once he learned, there was no stopping him. An obsessive and insatiable appetite for knowledge was his gift.

In his early teens his father introduced him to selling bait worms like many kids have lemonade stands. He also took on contracts to maintain cemeteries, and kept

some beef cattle on the “farm”. These activities earned him enough to attend college in robotics and manufacturing science.

He never lost his thirst for knowledge nor interest in growing food in a sustainable, healthy manner.

Early in his 40’s he returned to learning about worms, a back step to his teens. This time interested more in the qualities worms bring to soil and food crops as well as the potential to help our environment.

Today he may be one of the best known administrators of vermicomposting groups on Facebook. This blog, maintained by him seeks to provide a reference library of sorts for questions asked in those groups. His own experiences and newly discovered ideas will also be shared.

Known for his love for the Perionyx Excavatus (Blue Worms), Larry is also the person to refer to when you run into problems with those excellent but moody composting worms. He has made available a great guide on how to care for them in the form of an eBook called: The Rogue Wiggler.

But recently, Larry has generously spent time to write and publish a list of not 5 but 10 biggest mistakes people make when they are making their first steps into worm farming.
