Needle Exchange Programmes and Safe Injection Sites
Needle exchange programmes and safe injection sites are one of the main harm reduction measures that aim to reduce the spread of blood-borne viruses such as HIV and Hepatitis C among people who inject drugs. (Avert, 2013)
The Pro
A supervised injection site gives drug users a place to inject drugs and stabilize with a nurse present, therefore taking open drug use off the streets, in addition to allowing drug users to connect with other services, such as social workers, addiction counsellors, outreach teams, etc. (CanWest MediaWorks Publications, 2010). Not only do these facilities prevent and rehabilitate lives, it saves live, by reducing the spread of diseases and having alert staff to aid in potential overdose. (Wendy Stueck 2011)
The Cons
Despite the research studies backing these facilities and its harm-reduction approach, there is profound discomfort for many with any facility that gives addicts a green light to inject illegal drugs and flout the law. Also, by having the government’s support of supervised injection sites, it sends a mixed message to young people who might be considering illicit drug use. (Wendy Stueck, 2011)
