Why are nitrates added to many types of processed meat?

Nitrates (or nitrites) are natural chemicals that are found in the soil, air and water. The reason why so many nitrates are added to processed meat is to preserve the product and prvent bacteria from growing. The use of such nitrates have become a topic of discussion, as it has been linked to increase the risk of colon cancer.

What sorts of foodstuffs contain artificial colour?

Artificial colour is present in nearly every household product, from foods, to cleaning products to even medicine! Foods that contain artificial colour include macaroni and cheese, whipped frosting, wraps, nutritional snack bars, jams, fruit containers, candies, etc.
