Why Mid University in sweden?
After a first visit of the Mid-university at Stenden in February earlier this year, Brigitte Nitsch send a proposal to conduct a lecturer exchange at the ‘Tourism Studies’ faculty at Mid-Sweden University. This was accepted and included a number of lectures in relation to tourism and authenticity, tourism in developing countries and strategic management. Furthermore, an informal discussion was initiated about teaching methods and PBL. At that moment there were three students at the university in Sweden, one IHM and two MEM students. During a meeting with the IHM student it became clear that she enjoyed a caring, welcoming and high academic learning environment.
After lecturing, the affiliated Outdoor and Adventure Management Program was attended in Are. This is the major skiing area in Sweden. The students of this programme become ‘mountain leaders’. This Tourism programme at the university arranges student projects which directly relate to tourism impacts in sky resorts. Besides, a lot of attention is given to the inclusion of the Sami people in tourism development. Moreover, there are quite a lot of Dutch and German immigrants who started a business in tourism and/or agriculture in particular this area. Besides skiing resorts, the area is also famous for the ‘St Olavsleden’ pilgrim route, a cultural route of 450 km stretching from Trondheim to Selanger. Back to the city of Ostersund there new tourism products and services are initiated by Norden. For example, Ostersund is part of the European creative city network and famous for culinary tourism. If you are lucky, you might spot the monster in the lake nearby the city!
