One more secret is hidden in the
‘Marguerite d’amour’ brooch – the jewelry
version of daisy. The tribute is paid to
the well-known game, ‘He loves me, He
loves me not,’ in which the player picks
the petals off a daisy to discover the
true feelings of their beloved. An invisible
mechanism rotates the tallow-gold
petals to reveal engraved messages on
the other side: ‘Tendrement’ (‘tenderly’),
‘Passionnément’ (‘passionately’),
‘Éternellement’ (‘eternally’), ‘Infiniment’
(‘infinitely’), ‘A la folie’ (‘madly’).
Van Cleef & Arpels jewelry-watch maison
was founded in France in 1906 by Alfred
Van Cleef and his brother-in-law Charles
Arpels. The New York representative office
was opened in 1939. The Duke and the
Duchess of Windsor, Farah Pahlavi (the
empress of Iran), Marlen Dietrich, Grace
Kelly and Elizabeth Taylor have been the
maison’s clients at different times. The
company received patents for several
jewelry techniques, including a gem-setting
style called ‘Serti Mysterieux’ (‘Mystery
Setting’), a technique where the prongs are
invisible.
In September 2016 Van Cleef & Arpels
introduced ‘L’Arche de Noé’ (‘Noah’s Arch’)
collection in Paris.
