Haileybury Astana goes from strength to strength! an English Academy at Haileybury Astana. This special facility will offer intensive English instruction alongside gradual integration into the mainstream curriculum. Further research has led us to believe that many parents would like us to provide term-time accommodation for their children also. Thus our boarding house initiative was born! We are, therefore, very excited to announce that from August 2017 Haileybury Astana is offering boarding accommodation to students in Senior school aged 11 to 18 years. For those not familiar with this concept this is a very British institution – like in the Harry Potter films! There are many benefits for families: Mary Francis, Deputy Head Academic Six years ago Haileybury Astana opened initially as a primary school. Since then it has grown into an estab- lished international school with a senior school, too. The final piece of the jigsaw will fall into place in August 2017 when we open the doors to our IB Academy which will offer the International Baccalaureate qualification to pupils aged from 16 to 18. Haileybury Astana now belongs to a an elite group of schools accredited by the Cambridge International Exam Board and a member of the prestigious IB World Schools group. This year for the first time we held Junior and English Olympiads, extended our participation in local Maths competitions and participated successfully again in the World Scholar’s Cup. Through these competitions we dis- covered that many academically able children would like to attend Haileybury Astana and benefit from a rigorous British education but have been put off from apply- ing because they have had little exposure to English. Ever resourceful, we have come up with a plan to open · Children are immersed in an English-speaking environ- ment · Homework and study time are monitored · House parents look after the general welfare of the children · Greater focus on academic studies · Improved social skills through living as part of a larger group · An organized programme of activities in the evenings and at weekends · No time to feel bored or homesick! Further initiatives are in the pipe-line such as introduc- ing Robotics into the curriculum, participation in the International Young Naturalists competition and building a new Sports complex. Just as Kazakhstan has its vision for 2030 so, too, Hai- leybury Astana has an ambitious vision for the future.
