A comprehensive 'parts list' of the brain built from its
components, the cells
In-depth analysis sorts cells from the cerebral cortex
into 133 types, lays groundwork to explore function
Neuroscientists have moved one step closer to understanding the
complete list of cell types in the brain. In the most comprehensive
study of its kind to date, the researchers sorted cells from the
cortex, the outermost shell and the cognitive center of the brain,
into 133 different 'cell types' based on the genes the cells switch
on and off.

Just a few drinks can change how
memories are formed
Researchers have found that alcohol hijacks a conserved memory pathway in the
brain and changes which versions of genes are made, forming the cravings that
fuel addiction.

A study of hundreds of years of family
trees suggests a man's genes play a role
in him having sons or daughters. Men
inherit a tendency to have more sons or
more daughters from their parents. This
means that a man with many brothers
is more likely to have sons, while a man
with many sisters is more likely to have
daughters.
