Record Book Honors & Awards LIU All-Americans Jules Bender was the ?rst Blackbird to earn AllAmerica honors in 1937. A total of nine former Blackbirds have earned All-America honors. Frank J. Haggerty Award is presented annually by the National Invitation Tournament and the Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association. The award, which is named for the co-captain of the 1939-40 St. John’s basketball team, is given to the top basketball player in the metropolitan area. The Haggerty Award has been awarded annually since 1936, when it was given to LIU’s Jules Bender. The Blackbirds have had seven athletes honored with the award during its 74-year history, the third-most of any school.
