LIU opened with an 11-4 spurt in the second half and a layup by sophomore David Hicks put LIU ahead 44-28 with 16:27 to play. St. Francis clawed back into the game and a 15-5 run with during a ?ve-minute stretch tied the game at 60-60 following a pair of foul shots from Ricky Cadell. LIU responded on the next possession with a three-pointer from Hicks and never trailed again. Consecutive layups from Manigault pushed the lead to 69-65 and Wisseh went 3-of-4 from the foul line down the stretch to seal the win. Freshman Julian Boyd added 12 points off the bench, while Hicks chipped in with 10 points. The Blackbirds held a 48-33 edge on the glass and went 20-of-26 from the line, while SFNY was 7-of-12. Jamaal Womack led the Terriers with 18 points, while Perunicic added 18 points. Cadell and Rubino each had 11 points. Monmouth’s Alex Nunner scored his team’s ?nal 11 points, including the game-winning layup with seven seconds to play. Long Island (9-9, 5-3 NEC) took a 71-63 lead with 4:02 to play following a layup by junior Jaytornah Wisseh, but that was the Blackbirds’ ?nal ?eld goal of the evening. Nunner capped a run of seven straight points by converting a three-pointer on which he was fouled with 2:05 to play. He missed a chance to tie on the ensuing foul shot and LIU pushed the lead to 73-70 following a pair of foul shots by sophomore David Hicks. Monmouth came back with a pair of foul shots from Nunner with 1:30 left to make it 73-72. Following a missed Blackbirds shot, Yaniv Simpson collected the rebound and gave it off to Nunner who hit the winning layup at the other end. A last-second three-pointer by LIU was off the mark. The Blackbirds got off to a fast start as sophomore Kyle Johnson hit three straight three-pointers to spot LIU an 11-6 lead. Monmouth fought back to take a brief 1916 lead on a bucket by Travis Taylor, but a three-point play by Julian Boyd tied the game. LIU held Monmouth to one ?eld goal over the next nine minutes and forged ahead 36- 27. Senior Tyrone Mattison had a pair of treys in the spurt and Hicks capped it with a layup to give LIU its largest lead of the game. The Hawks hit two threepointers to close the half and make it 38-36 at halftime. Wisseh led all scorers with 22 points, while Johnson chipped in with 18 points. The Blackbirds shot 41.5 percent on the night, but were just 2-of-10 on three-pointers in the second half after draining seven in the ?rst period. Nunner led four Hawks in double-?gures with 14 points. Monmouth shot 57.7 percent after the break and hit 4-of-6 from the arc in the second half to hold on for the win.
