The Blackbirds turned 17 Wildcats turnovers into 22 points and limited B-CU to 32.1 percent shooting. Junior Jaytornah Wisseh led a balanced scoring effort with 14 points. The Blackbirds raced out to a 6-0 lead and never looked back after junior Aurimas Adomaitis hit an opening layup and senior Ron Manigault converted back-to-back tip-ins. The Wildcats got within three points twice, including 1411 following a jumper from Tyrel Adams, but that was as close as they could get. LIU outscored B-CU, 17-7, to close out the half and Wisseh’s deep three just before the buzzer made it 31-18. The second half opened with a 9-4 run by Long Island, bookended by layups from Adomaitis to build the lead to 40-22. Bethune-Cookman scored the next four points, but a three-pointer from Tyrone Mattison stopped the threat and kick-started a 13-4 spurt by LIU which ended with two more treys from Mattison to make it 53-30. The Blackbirds cruised from there as the Wildcats never got closer than 19 points and claimed their biggest win since Dec. 1, 2007 (Hartford, 84-62). Wisseh led all scorers and added six assists without a turnover. Manigault added 11 points and nine rebounds, while Mattison added 11 points off the bench. The Blackbirds allowed only Elliott Stanley to score double-?gures with 12 points. B-CU’s leading scorer, C.J. Reed, was limited to ?ve points on 2-of-16 shooting and the Wildcats were just 1-of-6 from three-point range on the night. The 46 points were the fewest allowed by LIU since an 80-39 win over CCNY on Dec. 22, 2005. Game 10•Manhattan 65, Long Island 61 Dec. 22, 2008•Draddy Gymnasium•Riverdale, N.Y. Long Island University went toe-to-toe on the road with Manhattan, but came away with a narrow 65-61 loss in Draddy Gymnasium. The game was a back-andforth affair with 12 lead changes, but LIU was held without a ?eld goal in the ?nal 4:54 and saw its two-game win streak snapped. Long Island (4-6) trailed 28-25 at halftime and fell behind by seven after Devon Austin scored the ?rst four points of the second half for Manhattan. After Andrew Gabriel converted a layup to make it 34-31, the Blackbirds responded with a 9-0 run. Senior Ron Manigault and sophomore David Hicks converted consecutive layups to give Long Island a 35-34 lead and a bucket by junior Jaytornah Wisseh was followed by a trey from Hicks to cap the run and push LIU’s lead to six. Manhattan came back with consecutive three-pointers by Chris Smith and a jumper from Patrick Bouli to take a 42-40 lead and the Jaspers stretched the lead following a dunk from Smith. Although a three-pointer from sophomore Kyle Johnson ended an 8-0 run, Smith continued his torrid pace by scoring Manhattan’s next nine points. Four-straight points from Wisseh and a layup by Manigault gave LIU the lead, 54-53, with 7:36 to play. A dunk by freshman Julian Boyd pushed the lead to three, but Darryl Crawford quickly tied the game. After a layup by Boyd with 4:54 to play gave LIU a 58-56 lead the Jaspers clamped down defensively and pulled ahead. Chris Smith scored on a drive with 3:47 to play that gave the hosts a 60-58 lead it would hold despite going just 5-of-10 from the line the rest of the way. Hicks led the Blackbirds with 16 points, while Wisseh added 14 points and nine assists. Johnson and Boyd each added 10 points, while Manigault contributed nine points and a game-high eight rebounds. LIU shot 41 percent from the ?eld, but was just 3-of-14 (.214) from the arc. Smith led all scorers by pouring in all 20 of his points after halftime. Austin and Crawford chipped in with 12 and 10 points for the Jaspers, respectively. The ?rst half featured seven ties, the last of which came at 17-17 with 6:30 left in the half. The Jaspers scored ?ve straight to take a 22-17 lead on a three-pointer from Austin and did not trail again the rest of the period. A jumper by Hicks with 0:48 left got LIU within three at halftime. 38 Long Island Blackbirds • 2009-10 Basketball • www.liuathletics.com
