Sophomore Kyle Johnson scored a game-high 23 points, but it was not enough for Long Island to overcome St. John’s in the season-opener for both squads, losing 73-63 at Carnesecca Arena. The Blackbirds got within three points in the second half before succumbing down the stretch. St. John’s raced out to a 15-3 lead ignited by eight points from D.J. Kennedy in the ?rst six minutes. A dunk by Paris Horne put SJU up 12 before the Blackbirds responded with a 12-3 spurt during which Johnson scored nine straight points. A foul shot by sophomore David Hicks cut the margin to 18-15. LIU (0-1) cut the de?cit to 21-19 on a jumper from Johnson, but a missed threepointer by Johnson on the next possession cancelled an opportunity to take the lead and St. John’s responded with nine quick points to take a 30-21 lead. The Red Storm maintained a ?ve-point cushion before a pair of foul shots from Sean Evans just before halftime gave the hosts a 36-29 lead at the break. Following the intermission, a pair of layups from junior Jaytornah Wisseh and a jumper from junior Aurimas Adomaitis quickly cut the St. John’s lead to 38-35 with 19:03 to play. The Red Storm buckled down however and held LIU scoreless for ?ve minutes and built the lead to 12 points, capped off by two foul shots by Paris Horne with 15:25 to play. A three-point play by senior Ron Manigault ended LIU’s scoring drought and made it 47-38. The Red Storm followed with six-straight points before consecutive three-pointers by freshman Michael Culpo with just over six minutes to play got LIU within 62-54, but that was as close as it got the rest of the way as SJU iced the game at the foul line down the stretch. Johnson was the only LIU player in double-?gures and he added six rebounds. Culpo chipped in with nine points, while Wisseh ?nished with eight, but committed seven turnovers. The Blackbirds shot just 39.2 percent for the game and was just 17of-31 (.541) from the line. Kennedy scored 23 points to lead St. John’s, while Evans added 13 points and 11 boards. The Red Storm shot 39.3 percent for the game and overcame a 4-of-23 (.174) effort from the arc. Game 2•Long Island 78, Army 68 Nov. 20, 2008•Wellness Center•Brooklyn, N.Y.
