S3
Towards the end of S2 pupils will be asked to select 8 subjects from the 14 they took in S1 & S2.
English and Maths will be 2 of the 8 subjects as compulsory. A degree of personalisation and choice
will sit within the principles of a broad general education. Modern Languages are compulsory until
the end of S3.
Pupils should reduce the number of subjects undertaken allowing them to have control over their
subject choices.
S3 is part of the S1/2/3 undertaking a ‘Broad General Education’.
Within S3, the majority of pupils would be working within 4th Level Outcomes and Experiences.
End of S3
At the end of S3 pupils will select 6 subjects, from the 8 that they pick at the end of S2. Pupils will
continue to study English and Mathematics as compulsory.
National 4 and 5 Courses and Qualifications have been developed to be undertaken in 160 hours,
meaning that 6 subjects is the optimum number of subjects for the time available in the year.
