Levels
Pupils will be able to access Music at National 4 or National 5 depending on previous experience and existing
skills.
Course Outline
There are four units, including an Added Value Unit. Each component unit is designed to provide progression
to the corresponding unit at the next level.
The four Units are:
Composing: Pupils have the opportunity to explore, experiment and apply compositional techniques to
create an original piece of music.
Understanding Music: Through listening, learners will develop knowledge and understanding of music across
a range of styles and genres.
Practical Activity: Pupils will develop and perform a programme of music on 2 chosen instrument(s)/voice.
They must prove application and improvement of their personal skills.
Performing Skills: Pupils will develop performing skills on a chosen instrument. Learners will develop
technical and musical skills while exploring a range of music.

These courses are aimed at pupils who have a general interest in music and for those with a more specific
interest in particular aspects of music. The course is practical and experimental in nature, with scope for
personal choice through creating, performing and analysing Music. Pupils will perform a variety of music on
two instruments, apply the use of music technology and reflect on and evaluate their own work/progress and
that of others to identify strategies to improve performance and creativity.
