At the end of S3 pupils will begin the Senior Phase. The Senior Phase can be regarded as that which
takes place in the final stages of compulsory education and beyond – normally around age 15-18.
The Senior Phase builds firmly on the Experiences and Outcomes a young person will have achieved
through the broad general education from S1-S3.
The Senior Phase will build firmly on the broad general education in S1-S3. All young people can
expect the entitlements set out in CfE.
Five entitlements
a coherent curriculum
the opportunity to obtain qualifications and to continue to develop the four capacities
opportunities to develop skills for learning, skills for life and skills for work
personal support
support in the transition to positive and sustained destinations beyond school
Whilst the Senior Phase is the main stage for pupils gaining qualifications it is important to
acknowledge that this phase must also provide programmes and opportunities that widen pupil
experiences and achievements.
