workshop for all’ from local group

dundun workshop demonstration for

and Life Arts, versatile duo, ‘She Brings
the Rain’ performing some of their

Wickham Market Primary
School ‘The Power of Reading’
‘Please can we put that book in our
library,’ is a phrase we are hearing a
lot at Wickham Market Primary. We
are on a mission to make reading cool
again and take on the technology
power giants so that children will pick
up a book rather than trawl through
youtube. Everyone is involved, staff,
parents, children, the local library, and
our reading army made up of local
residents who volunteer to make a
difference. Reading has become the
centre of all our teaching through a
scheme called the Power of Reading.
The slow reveal of a book, the hiding
of front covers and discussions of
what this book might be about
through illustrations, all build up the
excitement to engage the children’s
desire to read. We have introduced
new and contemporary authors into
our teaching who tackle the issues of
a modern world alongside traditional
stories that are the basis of our culture.
On World Book Day each child shared
their favourite bedtime story with the

class and parents, dressed in pyjamas
and cosy slippers we invited grown
ups to come in and share a story over
a hot chocolate and marshmallows,
in order to celebrate our most loved
authors.

reading corners has been looked at
