Women's Rights in Argentina | Page 7

Politics changed quite radically

with Colonel Juan and Evita Peron

in power. Peronism sought to

widen the electoral participation,

which meant that women would

officially be included in the

process. In 1944, the Work and

Women's Assistance Directorate

was created. The petition for the female vote was made possible through this

organization. In 1945, female support of Peronism became proinent and the

push for women's right to vote became more widespread and powerful.

Eventually, Evita Formed the Female Peronist Party which was

exclusive to females and considered part of the foundation of the feminist

movement.

In September 1947, the law changed which enabled women to vote in Argentina. Although there were many others who fought for this political change, President Juan Peron and Evita are most closely associated with this event. During this pivotal moment in history, Evita addressed the Argentine people from the balcony of the Casa Rosado to announce the change in law that not only granted them the right to vote, but also the right to be voted for and elected to office.
