E
ntering its fifth year as a program, the women’s hockey team saw many new faces
don the black and blue in October. In total, 12 student-athletes were recruited
by Head Coach Jamie Kivi for the 2013-14 season. As with any young squad, the
Sabres experienced their fair share of bumps and bruises along the road, but have
plenty to be proud of in the young season.
The Sabres couldn’t have asked for a better start to their year, opening with a
convincing 5-1 victory over St. Catherine’s. In the tilt, junior Amanda Waigand began
her offensive crusade, tallying four points on two goals and two assists. Not only was
this the first win on opening day in program history, but Waigand also set the school
record for points in a game (4).
Beginning conference play in just their second weekend of the season, Marian hit
the road for Adrian, Mich. The Bulldogs flexed their muscle in Friday’s game, winning
4-1. Marian would come back with a fight on Saturday, taking a first period lead thanks
to a Nina Laurie short-handed goal and a power-play tally from Waigand. The lead
would be short-lived, however, as Adrian powered back with three unanswered in the
second to reclaim the lead. Sophomore Kelly Leslie managed to bring the Sabres to
within one with her goal in the third, but Marian couldn’t find the equalizer, falling 4-3.
“Amanda is someone we look to when we need a goal or an offensive push,”
Kivi said. “Offensively has been a threat, especially on the power play and even when
