When presented with those who are not so talented, Randy, and especially Paula are very gracious to even the worst singer, attempting to encourage and spare their feelings. But our friend Simon is always brutally honest with the worst of contestants.

Simon gives his honest synopsis of the horrible performance, and of course some of the contestants beg to differ with Simon’s opinion. For some of the contestants it is as if they are hearing for the very first time that they are horrible singers. Which may mean either they are “great” singers by their own admission.

Or their family and friends who have heard them sing, have not had the heart to be honest about their vocal talents. Some of the contestants get so angry about being told they cannot sing, that they have a few choice words for the judges, especially Simon. So the contestant reaches the American Idol audition before a nationwide television show, believing they possess a gift that truly they do not have.

Which begs the question, how does one know that they possess a gift? I believe we all possess a gift, some even more than one. But how do we really know what our gift is? The bible declares that all of us have been given at least one spiritual gift. In ministry, we all have witnessed at one time or another, individuals who are attempting to do something they clearly are not gifted to do. It is painful to watch. It is detrimental on an individual, and so unfair on a corporate level, as it relates to the body of Christ. To aid in your journey of discovery let me suggest some ways to discover your gift.

First of all, your gift is not your decision its your discovery. The bible says the spirit gives gifts as He desires. The Creator decides and the creation discovers. Our gifts and skills are given by the Holy Spirit. Though you may possess the same gift as someone else. How YOU do it will be strikingly different from the way someone else does it.

Our job is to discover what gifts we have been given. So many times based on a passion or a longing for a certain gift we decide that we are going to pursue a certain gift. Only to discover (or not) that we were

never gifted to do this. Remember there are different gifts, and different ways they are put into operation. I preach from a pulpit platform on Sundays. However, during the same moment there are preachers who are preaching on a street corner.

We are doing the same thing but called to operate it different. Don’t be afraid to try an array of different things. You are bound sooner or later to find your niche

and fit. But work hard to discover your unique gift.
