Historians such as Marilyn Lake in her book ‘The History of Australian Feminism: Getting Equal’ (Lake, M. 1973) have identified two ‘waves’ of the women’s movement. The first wave began before the turn of the twentieth century and continued into the decades following World Wars I and II. The main aim of this wave was women’s suffrage or the right of women to vote.
