The film ‘For Love or Money’ is a pictorial history of Australian women which shows the cycle of women’s gains and losses as they are moved in and out of the workforce according to the demands of the time. Between 1940 and 1945 women’s entry into paid employment increased where they had access to a wider range of jobs and higher rates of pay. This was a time of strong feminist activity and in 1943 the Australian Women’s Charter was launched which demanded that the Federal Government hold a referendum to ensure that all women be entitled to the same rights as men. However, women who joined the workforce had a number of hurdles to overcome such as being ridiculed in the newspapers for taking on factory work; protests by trade unions against taking on traditionally men’s jobs and men’s view that the employment of women would lead to a reduction of wages.
