GAME 12-14: ALVERNO/WLC/ROCKFORD
LAST TIME OUT
The Sabres erased a 12-point deficit with six minutes left against Benedictine last time
out, but couldn’t complete the comeback as the Eagles used solid guard play to pick up the
big road win. Amelia Mirsberger poured in a season-high 17 points, while Dani Huray
and Sarah Albert added 11 points apiece.
The Eagles shot 54 percent from the field and went 16-for-22 down the stretch. Meghan
Novak scored 12 straight points, including eight free throws to seal the win down the
stretch. Marian continued its sluggish shooting percentage, going just 31 percent from the
field, including a 9-for-35 effort from three-point range.
A LOOK AT THE INFERNO
Alverno College is off to a solid start in conference play, entering the week 8-5 overall,
5-3 in the NACC – good for fifth. The Inferno has dropped three-of-four overall, including a
10-point defeat to Edgewood on the road last Saturday. Alverno led by as many as 11 in the
first half before heading to the locker room tied. The Inferno shot just 34.4 percent from the
field and failed to get to the free throw line as frequently as their counterpart, going 10-for13 in the loss.
Five seniors are featured in this veteran starting lineup, four of which are averaging
in double figures this season. Forward Devon Gorman leads the way with 16.1 points per
game, following by Jamie Hoernke’s 15.7 ppg and team-best 8.2 rebounds per game. Ashley
Berry and Kristen Speerschneider turn in 10.5 and 10 points, respectively. The Inferno are
third in the league in scoring (71.2 ppg) overall and first in conference play (71 ppg), while
holding opponents to a league-low 23.2 percent from beyond the arc.
ALL-TIME VS. ALVERNO
Marian and Alverno will match up for the 22nd time in the all-time series with the Inferno
taking the previous two meetings, both of which came in a season sweep last year. Alverno
squeaked by at home with a 60-52 win Jan. 8, 2013 before invading Sadoff Gymnasium for
a 63-44 win Feb. 7, 2013. The last Marian win came back on Feb. 15, 2012, securing a series
sweep with a 86-75 victory at home.
SCOUTING THE WARRIORS
Following a rare three-game losing streak, including a loss to Alverno in the league
opener, Wisconsin Lutheran College has rattled off six straight wins and is off to a 7-3
overall record with a 5-1 mark in NACC play. Since the three-point loss to the Inferno back
on Nov. 30, the Warriors have averaged a margin of victory of more than 21 points over its
last six games.
Junior center Kristen Schulz leads four Warriors averaging in double figures with 16.3
points per game on 53.4 percent shooting and adds 11.9 rebounds per game – a league best.
Melanie Laete follows with 11 ppg followed by Taylor Bahr and Rachel Hoft, who add 10 ppg
apiece.
The Warriors are first in field goals made (27.5), attempted (62.6) and field goal
percentage (43.9) per game. They also average a league-best 15.3 offensive rebounds and
an 8.9 rebounding margin, while holding opponents to a league-low 56.2 ppg on 34.1 percent
field goal shooting.
ALL-TIME VS. WISCONSIN LUTHERAN
Marian has struggled against the perennial powerhouse of the Northern Athletics
Collegiate Conference of late as Wisconsin Lutheran College has won nine straight and
enters Thursday’s 48th meeting all-time with a 35-12 edge in the series. The last Marian
victory was back on Feb. 8, 2005 in a 62-56 result in Milwaukee.
