However, coming off a four-win campaign a season ago, things appear to be looking up. Marian is 3-7 overall, 3-2 in league play, which places them sixth in the standings and in line for a NACC tournament spot. Coming into the year, the big question was how will the eight newcomers contribute to Head Coach Bill Peters roster? Well, through the first 10 games, those newcomers have accounted for nearly 47 percent of the team’s total offense, led by UW-Waukesha transfer, Sarah Olewinski, who has averaged a second-best 8.4 points per game. Senior Sarah Albert has emerged as the team’s number one scoring threat, turning in 14.4 points per game on 44.2 percent shooting, including 43.8 percent from beyond the arc – her specialty – which ranks second in the NACC. The three-point shot has been the team’s bread and butter as the Sabres are 13-8 when knocking down 10 or more three’s over the last three seasons, including a 9-1 mark when doing so back in 2011-12. However, the strategy has changed over the course of this season with the three ball becoming less frequent over the second half of the season as the Sabres are averaging just 18 three-point attempts over the last five games as compared to 24.4 attempts in the first five contests. In fact, Marian went just 1-for-5 from long distance in a 58-56 win over Concordia Chicago, Dec. 14. It marked the first time the Sabres had made just a single three-pointer and won since 2006. Marian continues to rank first in the NACC in three’s made per game (7.7) and second in attempts (21.2) and percentage (36.3). However, its overall field goal percentage of 38.3, which ranks eighth in the league, needs improvement. The addition of Emma Jarvey has provided a boost on the glass with her team-leading 4.8 rebounds per game, however, the Sabres rank last in rebounds per game (30.1) and 10th in rebounding margin (-8.7). All considered, this young group is still gelling as a cohesive unit and remains in prime position to strike for a second half push the second half of the season. LAST TIME OUT The Sabres limped into the break with a pair of losses to 21st-ranked UW-Oshkosh and rival Edgewood College at home to wrap up the 2013 slate. Marian hung with UWO for the first seven minutes before the Titans imposed their will at home with a 15-2 run midway through the first half to break it open and they wouldn’t look back on the way to a 65-44 win. Against Edgewood, the Sabres held a 54-52 lead with just over two minutes remaining before the Eagles’ Rachel Pope went on a solo 10-point run to lead her team to a 62-57 victory inside the Sadoff. The Sabres struggled from the field, shooting just 27.5 percent on 14-for-51 shooting and were outrebounded by 10 (43-33). SCOUTING THE EAGLES Benedictine University enters the second half of the season with conference wins in three of its last four games, but has limped into the New Year after taking losses to nonconference foes, Gettysburg and Guilford. The Eagles are 4-7 overall and 4-2 in the NACC, good for fifth place. They attempt the third-fewest three’s per game (10.5) in the league, but are hitting at a high rate, going 37.9 from beyond the arc, which ranks first in the NACC. Benedictine is second in free throw percentage (72.4), but ranks toward the middle of the pack in nearly every other category. Junior guard Vincenza Ranallo leads the team in points (12.5) and rebounds (5.9) through the first 11 games of the season. Meghan Novak is second in scoring with 11.6 ppg, while Briana Hamilton is third at 9.5 ppg. Meanwhile, Alanna Ferry has stabilized the point guard play with 7.4 ppg and a team-best 4.1 assists per game. In conference play, the Eagles rank second in the NACC with 14 assists per game.
