UNCHARACTERSTIC WIN
The Sabres’ success from three-point range has been well-documented, which makes
last Saturday’s win against Concordia Chicago that much more surprising and impressive.
Marian went just 1-for-5 from beyond the arc and won for the first time since 2006.
It was the fewest made three-pointers by a Bill Peters-coached team. The previous low
was six made three’s in a 61-41 win at Finlandia on Jan. 4, 2011. Marian started the 200607 season with back-to-back wins over Valley Forge Christian and Wilson by a combined
score of 178-58 and accounted for just one made three in each contest.
RECORDS MAY FALL
Sarah Albert has shown to be one of the purest shooters in the conference, if not in the
nation. The Howards Grove native averaged 49.6 percent from three-point range in her
first season as a Sabre back in 2011-12. She followed it up with a 42.4-clip last year for a
career average of 45.7 percent.
She needs just four three’s, after going 18-for-42 through eight games this season, to
take over second place on the all-time list and remains 63 three’s shy of tying Brook
Haen (‘11), who has a program-best 204.
Albert currently holds the career standard in free throw percentage, going 85.1 percent
(114-for-134) in her third season.
STIFF NON-CONFERENCE SCHEDULE
The Sabres have faced four Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opponents
to open the 2013-14 season. Marian is allowed to schedule just five non-conference
opponents due to a 20-game conference schedule and, this season, all five will be against
state schools. The Sabres face nationally-ranked and undefeated UW-Oshkosh at Kolf
Arena Wednesday, Dec. 18, for their fifth and final regular season non-conference game.
One of the more dominant leagues among Division III conferences, Marian’s WIAC
opponents have combined for a 31-17 mark through Dec. 17.
