It’s only blemish was a loss at home to No. 5 St. Thomas, 48-43, in which the game was tied with just over two minutes remaining. The Pointers lost three senior starters from a year ago, including reigning WBCA NCAA Division III Player of the Year, Sam Barber, who averaged 19.1 points and 7.5 rebounds per game. The team’s top returner is senior forward Myranda Tyler, who was an All-WIAC Defensive Team selection a year ago and leads the team with 11.3 points and 10.5 rebounds per game this season. Kaitlyn Jacobs is second on the team with 9.8 ppg followed by Jamie Destache’s 8.8 ppg. A very balanced and unselfish squad, the Pointers are averaging 14.5 assists per game. UWSP Head Coach Shirley Egner is in her 26th season and recently picked up her 460th career victory with a 73-71 road win over Illinois Wesleyan last time out. LAST TIME OUT The Sabres did battle with two challenging WIAC opponents at the UW-Platteville tournament last weekend, falling to host Platteville Friday in overtime, 81-77, before La Crosse got the better of a 70-54 decision Saturday. Senior Sarah Albert scored 24 points on 7-of-14 from the field, including 7-for-7 from the charity stripe, against Platteville. She also connected on three triples. A 21-5 run keyed a 14-point, second-half comeback and put the Sabres in front by six points down the stretch. The Pioneers ensued with a comeback of their own and outscored Marian 15-11 in overtime. Jessica Roberts added 14 points off the bench, while Amelia Mirsberger chipped in 12 points and pulled down eight rebounds. On Saturday, La Crosse used a 42-10 advantage in the paint and converted 18 Marian turnovers into 18 points to solidfy a 16-point victory. Newcomers Sarah Olewinski and Nicole Paulus led the Sabres in scoring with 12 and 10 points, respectively. ALL-TIME VS. UW-STEVENS POINT Marian and Stevens Point will meet for the eighth time in program history. The Pointers have yet to concede as they have taken all seven previous meetings. In their last meeting back on Nov. 20, 2012, the seventh-ranked Pointers ran away with a 68-19 win at home. Last year’s meeting was the first since December 2001. STIFF NON-CONFERENCE TEST The Sabres will face their fourth Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opponent to open up the 2013-14 season when UWStevens Point invades Sadoff Gymnasium Tuesday, Nov. 26. Marian is allowed to schedule just five non-conference opponents and all of them will be against state schools. One of the primarily dominant leagues among Division III conferences, Marian’s WIAC opponents have combined for a 17-6 mark through Nov. 25. Following the Stevens Point match-up, the Sabres still have a Dec. 18 road meeting against Oshkosh on the schedule. GAME 1: UW-Stout FROM WAY DOWNTOWN Like it did last year, Marian is once again leading the NACC in three’s made and three’s attempted. However, the biggest difference from last year has been the increase in makes and efficiency. The Sabres are averaging 11.3 makes on 25.3 attempts per game in 2013-14 compared to 8.3 makes on 26.3 attempts last year. The Sabres are currently second in the league in three-point percentage at 44.7, a 13.2 percent increase from last year’s squad, which finished fifth in that department. IMPROVEMENT ON GLASS Marian has made it a point to improve in the rebounding department and it has been evident through three games. Despite a -3 margin on the glass currently, the Sabres have improved overall by nearly three rebounds per game and, most notably, cut down on rebound margin by more than seven compared to last year. In 2012-13, opponents outrebounded the Sabres 42.2-29.3 compared to 35-32 so far this season. FOR THE 42nd TIME Marian University women’s basketball begins its 42nd season in program history when it faces UW-Stout on the road Tuesday, Nov. 19. The Sabres played their first-ever season under former Head Coach Bruce Prall back in 1972-73. LIVING UP TO THE “BILL ”ING Head Coach Bill Peters, who enters his fourth season at the helm, has revived a struggling program that won just 19 games combined in the three seasons leading up to his arrival. Peters was the thirdfastest in Marian history to 32 wins. VETERAN PRESENCE TO LEAD THE WAY The Sabres return five players from the 2012-13 squad, led by seniors Dani Huray and Sarah Albert. Huray tied the single-season record with 123 assists last season, averaging nearly five helpers per game. Albert, who was the 2011-12 three-point percentage champion among all divisions, is just 22 three-pointers shy of taking over second place all-time in Marian laurels. OH CAPTAINS, MY CAPTAINS Head Coach Bill Peters has named his cap tains for the 2013-14 season and they are: Seniors Dani Huray and Sarah Albert, junior Amelia Mirsberger and senior student assistant coach Kelsey Moore. WHO ARE YOU, WHO WHO There are several new faces on the roster this season, nine to be exact. The list of newcomers features eight freshmen and junior college transfer Sarah Olewinski, who hails from Waukesha and attended UW-Waukesha a season ago. Freshmen Molly Kovarik and Jessica Roberts trade in their soccer and volleyball apparel, respectively, for a basketball uniform. Women’s basketball and women’s hockey are the only teams on campus with multiple two-sport athletes. Marian University Athletic Communications • Sadoff Gymnasium • 45 S.
