On Wednesday, Marian made the long bus ride to Aurora where it was looking to put an end to a six-game skid. Neither team led by more than eight points in the contest and both teams took relatively good care of the ball. However, the Spartans turned those 13 Marian miscues into 15 points and went 11-for-11 at the foul line in the second half on the way to a 65-59 win. Senior Sarah Albert led two in double figures with 20 points, including 18 in the first half where she went 6-for-6 from beyond the arc. Saturday’s match-up at Benedictine was the second between both teams this season and the Sabres had their sights set on avoiding a regular season sweep after dropping a 74-60 decision at home back on Jan. 4. Unfortunately, the Eagles came out strong and the Sabres struggled to put the ball in the basket in the second half, converting just 14.8 percent of their 27 shot attempts, including an 0-for-14 effort from three. Marian would finish the game 23.6 percent from the field and went without a basket for the final six minutes. Junior Sarah Olewinski was the lone Sabre in double figures with 11 points. A LOOK AT THE RAIDERS Following a brief hiccup in which it dropped two straight league games to Aurora and Alverno, MSOE has gotten back on track after winnings its last two against Benedictine and Concordia Chicago - both on the road. The Raiders are tied with Alverno for the third-best record in the league at 8-3 to go along with a 10-6 overall mark, which has been quite the improvement from the two-win season experienced a year ago. The Raiders are getting it done across the board, leading the league in points per game (74.0) and steals per game (10.5), while ranking second in field goals made (26.1), field goal percentage (43.7) and rebound margin (+6.2). Holly Denfeld leads three Raiders in double figures at 14.9 ppg with a team-best 9.9 rebounds per contest. Megan Kroll adds 11.8 ppg, 5.2 rpg, 2.6 apg and 2.1 steals, while Shannon Larson chips in 11.3 ppg. ALL-TIME VS. MSOE Marian and MSOE will meet for the 47th time in their programs histories. The Sabres lead the all-time series, 32-14, but have lost the last two to the Raiders, including one earlier season in a 65-59 defeat at home back on Dec. 4. In that meeting, there were 11 ties and 10 lead changes and Shannon Larson led five Raiders in double figures, pouring in a gamehigh 21 points on 7-of-9 shooting and 7-of-8 from the foul line. SCOUTING THE INFERNO Alverno College enters the week tied for third place in the league standings with MSOE at 8-3 in the NACC, 11-5 overall. The Inferno is coming off three straight wins over Marian, MSOE and Lakeland with the latter two away from home. Alverno ranks second in the league in scoring at 73.1 ppg, while ranking third in field goal percentage (42.2), three-point percentage (33.7), steals per game (9.1) and points per game allowed (63.5). The Inferno are 7-0 at home this season, but just 4-3 on the road. Devon Gorman leads four Inferno players averaging in double figures with 16.6 ppg to go along with 7.2 rebounds per contest. Jamie Hoernke averages 16.1 ppg and a teamhigh 7.6 rpg, followed by Ashley Berry and Kristen Speerschneider at 11.6 and 10.1 ppg, respectively. Speerschneider is second in the league at 5.4 assists per game as well.
